The Open

Another February has rolled right on round and that means it’s nearly time for The Open! We couldn’t be more excited about it this year as we’ll be able to do the workouts together again! Sharing that pain is all part of the fun…right?

But if you’re new to CrossFit then you might be wondering what all the fuss is about. Here’s our breakdown on The Open and how we handle it at CrossFit Volentia.

What is The Open?

The Open is an annual online worldwide CrossFit competition and the beginning of the Road to the CrossFit Games for the top athletes! This year it runs from 24th February to 14th March. Workouts are released on the CrossFit Games website on Thursdays at 12pm PT, so we don’t get to see them until Friday morning. Once released you have until Monday at 5pm PT to do the workout and submit your score online.

The first two weeks we will be doing them on Monday 28th February and Monday 7th March with the final workout taking place on Saturday 12th March followed by a box social.

As you’ll have seen from our recent classes where we’ve done some Open workouts from previous years, they’re varied and challenging! But the great thing about CrossFit and The Open is that it’s accessible for everyone as there are lots of workout options available so each week you can choose the version of the workout that’s right for your age group and fitness level. There’s RX and scaled plus foundations for those who have just started their CrossFit journey. There are also several divisions including adaptive, masters and teens making The Open an accessible competition for everyone, regardless of skill or ability.

Why should I sign up?

The Open is designed to encourage the CrossFit community to come together to share an experience and that’s even more powerful after the past couple of years. If you don’t want to sign up to The Open officially then that’s fine, you can still enjoy the challenge in class.

But it’s definitely worth spending that $20 and signing up because:

1.     It lets you check how your fitness is doing and shows you what you need to work on for next year.

2.     It’s a great way to see how you compare with other CrossFit enthusiasts.

3.     You’ll feel even more part of the CrossFit community.

4.     It gives you an extra reason to stay motivated with your training, which we can all do with at some point!

5.     If you do it again next year then you get to see how far you’ve come and that’s something that always throws up some pleasant surprises.

We know that not everyone does CrossFit to compete. In fact most of our members do CrossFit for the health benefits and community feel. But this isn’t your ordinary competition. It’s a chance to be part of a positive worldwide experience that’ll help you feel fitter and more positive within yourself. Isn’t that something you want to be part of?
