New Year Training Resolutions

Whether you’re a fan of New Year’s Resolutions or not, the start of a new year is a great time to evaluate your goals and plan out what you want to achieve in the year ahead. A lot of people use this time to focus on training goals, which is natural: you’ve just gone through Christmas, a time filled with food, and Spring is just around the corner, so you want to feel and look your best for the better weather.

But what’s the best way to approach setting training goals and sticking to them? Here are some of our top tips:

Set realistic goals

Don’t give yourself a giant mountain to climb by wanting to run a marathon in March or deadlift triple your bodyweight in May, especially if you’ve never done these activities before. Instead find a goal that is realistic and achievable. It could be as simple as going to a class twice a week. Once you’ve achieved that consistently you can set a new goal and progress from there.

Break your goals down

If you’ve got a specific goal in mind like competing in a CrossFit competition then set yourself a series of smaller goals, so you can work towards your larger goal in a more achievable way. There might be a range of things you need to work on like increasing deadlift weight or clean and jerk technique. Breaking this down and focussing on one thing at a time means you’re more likely to get to your end goal.

Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself

We know we’ve said be realistic and break your goals down but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t challenge yourself. If you’re already going to classes 3 times a week then don’t make that your goal: it’s too easy! Instead challenge yourself to go to an extra class, increase your weights or improve your technique somewhere. It might seem daunting but achieving a goal you’re not sure is possible can have an amazing impact on your confidence, as well as your health and fitness.

Find a training buddy

Sticking to goals is easier with a training buddy. If you haven’t got one then maybe chat to someone you see in classes regularly and ask if they can give you an extra boost when you’re struggling to stay focussed. Our members are an incredibly supportive community, so there’ll always be someone willing to help. You can also speak to one of our coaches who are available to lend a hand and give you some advice and support.

Remember training is a marathon, not a sprint

Training regularly is an important lifestyle choice. It’s something you should be doing to keep healthy and feel good, so don’t rush to achieve your goal. Set yourself a challenge that you can build up to and then work on the next one, and the next one, and the next one! It can make training even more fun and rewarding than it already is.

Our coaches complete goal setting sessions with our members every three months. This helps our members set and reach their targets on a regular basis, so they’re always working towards a new challenge.
