Starting Exercise by Nicola Tunstall

Taking a break from exercising regularly isn’t ideal but life happens and sometimes it’s unavoidable. You might have got injured and been forced to take a break or maybe you’ve just been too busy at work to find time to workout consistently. Whatever the reason, the most important thing to do is realise how valuable exercise is and reintroduce it into your weekly routine.

If you’ve been injured or have ongoing health concerns then it’s advisable to consult your doctor first, so they can give you a check-up and guidance on things to do or (more importantly) not do.

If not then you’re ready to get cracking! But it’s best to start off steady. Don’t go from not running or lifting weights for a year to then training like you’re entering a Body Building competition tomorrow. You’ll end up hurting yourself or just putting yourself off because the DOMS are too intense!

At CrossFit Volentia, we have a couple of different ways to introduce you back into exercise. If you’re an experienced CrossFitter then our Membership Manager, Laura, will get you booked into one of our classes for free. Where one of our coaches will assess your movement, so we know you’re safe and can move into our regular classes.

If you’re a beginner then you’ll be booked into one of our beginner’s free taster classes. This means you’ll be with people who are in the same situation as you, so we can take more time to explain and demo the movements to you. For us, it’s always about safety first. We want to make sure you’re confident in what you’re doing, so when you’re ready to join classes you can get the most out of them.

This is something that not many other gyms do. But it’s something that our members say is a real bonus. But don’t take our word for it. Hear it from them yourself:

“Completing the beginner’s course and becoming a regular member has been my biggest achievement! Since joining my energy levels and fitness have drastically increased, my clothes fit better and my general well-being has had a much-needed boost” – Emma

“I joined CrossFit Volentia a little over 3 years ago after following the sport for a short while online. It didn’t take too long before I was hooked and the number of classes I attended each week began to increase. From the sense of community among the members (that I’ve not experienced in a gym before) and the depth of knowledge of all of the coaches, to the constantly varied programming, it makes each session at Volentia both enjoyable and challenging, with a focus on learning the basics and proper movement patterns first and foremost. The level of engagement between coaches and members is fantastic too. The coaching team will always find a way for a member to complete their workout regardless of what level they're at. I can honestly say I don’t see myself moving to another gym” – Adie

“I was never a sporty person and gyms were always boring to me, which is why I always struggled to find the motivation to show up. CrossFit Volentia changed all that. I found myself being excited about what the next class will bring knowing that the coaches will be there to support my learning and development” – Marco

“I had always wanted to try CrossFit and I finally bit the bullet after lockdown last summer. Rocking up for the first outdoor induction session…in the British summer rain…I felt welcome by Nicola and at home from day dot! I love the new family I have made with the Volentia community and the coaches are second to none, helping and encouraging me to be a better version of myself at every class. The improvements I have made in less than a year are all down to their expertise and support! I wouldn’t be without Volentia! I'm an addict! It's official!" – Gemma
