Start With Small Steps - Your Fitness Journey Begins Now
It’s January and so many of us(me included) are starting to think about committing to new habits or rekindling some that fell by the wayside in 2024
A new year is a great time to start something new or recommit but sometimes we go too hard too soon and make it very tough.
Here’s a secret that can transform your fitness journey: small changes lead to big results.
Too often, we start the year with huge goals like "I’ll work out every day" or "I’ll lose 15 kg in 3 months." While big targets are awesome, these overwhelming goals can sometimes leave us feeling defeated when life gets busy.
Instead, start small and try to build the process and your framework for success rather than always focusing on the outcome. Smaller process goals are easier to achieve, and achieving them builds confidence and momentum towards the bigger outcome goals.
Here’s how you can begin:
Set a Goal: Commit to working out 3 times this week for just 30 minutes. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a strength training session, or a group fitness class, consistency is more important than intensity when building a habit.
Stay Consistent: Choose the same days and times for your workouts(we know life gets in the way sometimes but try to maintain that habit). For example, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 6 PM. This builds a routine that’s easier to stick with because your brain starts to expect it.
Track Progress: Keep it simple. Use a notebook, a habit-tracking app, or even a calendar where you check off each completed workout. Seeing a visual representation of your success keeps you motivated and excited to keep going.
Remember: It’s not about perfection; it’s about showing up and clocking in. If you’ve read “Atomic Habits” by James Clear you’ll know that he talks about small, consistent efforts that compound over time to deliver BIG results.
So let this be the year you focus on habits that stick, not resolutions that fade.
You’ve got this!
