To go or not to go...that is the question!
But should it be?
So..here’s the scenario.
It’s 6.30pm, you’ve just left work-a bit later than you’d hoped to but that’s just the way it goes sometimes isn’t it…you’re stuck in traffic and it’s looking likely you’ll now miss the 8pm class you booked yourself into. Ah..Not to worry, there’s an 06.30am class tomorrow, you don’t really like morning training but you’re sure you’ll get there..you’ll book in to that and train in the morning instead.
So you go home, and before you go to sleep you set your alarm for 05.15..plenty of time to get some sleep and get up for class! What a brilliant idea!
fast forward to the morning….
It’s probably cold
I'm a bit tired
I'll get up in just a minute..
It really is cold..I’m sure I can hear rain
I’m sure I’ll wake the house if I get up now, that’s really unfair of me
Perhaps it’s a bad idea to go this morning
Yeah, it probably is a bad idea
I could just go tonight instead..WHAT a brilliant idea!
I’m not going to get up..
One more day of not going to the gym isn’t going to hurt is it??
Just go back to sleep, I’ll go tonight instead
And so the story goes on and on. The end result? You don’t go to the gym today, or the next day (you get stuck at work, stuck in traffic, stuck in a meeting, just stuck in general..) you don’t go for the rest of the week and now you’re just wondering whether you really did want to get fit after all.
The scenario for going to work is a different one though (I’d hazard a guess anyway!)
Your alarm goes off, you get up and then continue with your usual routine. You do this every day, whether you want to or not. If you don’t get up, there will be consequences and there’s something else going on here too... It’s something you do day in, day out, at the same time every day and you don’t question it. It’s a non negotiable, it’s part of your day, it’s a HABIT.
So how does this help me in my daily routine outside of work, I hear you ask?!?
To start with, decide WHY you want to go to the gym and train, how important is it to you and once you’ve got that straight put the habits in place which will make this happen.
DON’T give yourself the choice to back out.
STOP having the conversations with yourself which allow you to change your mind.
MAKE the decision to go, and just GO
You’ll find that life actually becomes far simpler! No more conversations with yourself, no more guilt trips and no more put off workouts which produce zero gains!
Try it for 2 weeks and let me know how it feels!
